who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
This week I discovered something about myself. I have been living in a holding pattern for sometime and my coping mechanism was to just hold on tight, like a cat on a screen door. There is nothing wrong with holding on, and there is certainly nothing wrong with waiting – that is life. But my waiting and holding was without hope. I left it somewhere. I put hope away. That was the issue.
Faith requires hope. My faith was being limited because I left hope out of the equation.
So when I read that God satisfies my desires with good things, I had to pause. Do I believe that God truly satisfies my desires? And with good? I know I believe this for others, but my hopeless faith was proving something very different.
David lived a long and maturing life when he wrote this psalm. Decades of experiencing the love, mercy, and forgiveness of God set a solid faith. And, faithfulness. David saw God’s faithfulness, even when he failed.
Born into a large family, David served as a shepherd, saw God’s goodness in warding off animal terrors who threatened his sheep. David experienced God’s goodness when he faced Goliath, and King Saul. He saw God’s goodness (and mercy) when God sent Nathan the prophet to him to reveal his heart and bring him back to right relationship with God. And, this is only a short list. God’s goodness to you and I is the same.
Make a list. Make a list of areas where your heart is completely satisfied with God’s goodness. Try to avoid material or financial good. I’ll share some of my list if that helps you get started:
- I am completely satisfied knowing that God is over all and I can trust him.
- I am completely satisfied knowing the people in my life, family, co-workers, neighbors are the people God placed in my life. He works in and through them for His good pleasure.
Thank you God, for your faithfulness to me; thank you that you are with me when my hope is low. Grow and bolster my faith! Help me to be open to receive all the ways you want to satisfy my desires with good things. And, thank you for the promise to renew my strength. Amen
